Coffee Antigua Delicia

From the mountainous land of Huatusco (the rabbit that lives among trees), Veracruz. This is where coffee first arrived in Mexico. Many generations of farmers have developed an unmatched technique for coffee harvesting in this land, which they have refined over centuries.

Due to its proximity to the ocean, its altitude, and its mineral-rich soil, coffee beans grown here develop a deep, intense flavour that elevates the drinking experience. This is why these specially selected arabica beans have been named Ancient Delicacy.

What makes this coffee special?

To produce our Antigua Delicia coffee, the farmers selected the Arabica varieties of Catimores, Sachimores and Obata. These coffee beans are grown in the volcanic soil of Huatusco, Veracruz, on the Atlantic coast of the country (whereas Canto de Quetzal is grown on the Pacific Coast.) Volcanic soil has many benefits for coffee growth: known as “andisols,” volcanic soil is rich in minerals such as phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and iron, which are essential for cultivating coffee beans.

The soil is also highly porous, allowing water to drain freely, hydrating the coffee plants but preventing the roots from rotting. In addition to growing in volcanic earth, our Antigua Delicia coffee is watered by the melted glacier ice from Popocateptl, one of Mexico’s most active volcanoes. The combination of all of these elements results in coffee beans with an exquisite profile with strong, nutty notes.

These coffee beans are grown and harvested under unique conditions: a microclimate known as a “shadow forest”. This microclimate benefits from permanent clouds and dense cloud cover, which shade, protect and water the delicate arabica coffee plants. This, combined with an ideal altitude and volcanic soil, allows for the cultivation of high-quality, speciality coffee.

In order to preserve its intrinsic quality, this coffee has been meticulously harvested to ensure only the mature coffee cherries are picked.

Roasted at the origin, Antigua Delicia coffee beans are a medium roast. How you prepare your coffee determines the strength; for a stronger brew, use around 15g of ground coffee (per cup) in a french press.

Care & Recommendations

Order your coffee as whole beans or ground for espresso (ideal for americano, latte or flat white preparation) or a custom grind for your coffee maker. Where possible, we recommend ordering our coffee as whole beans, as they retain their freshness and peak flavour for longer (up to 6 months is optimum, after this the flavour may start to decline.) Ground coffee starts to lose freshness after around 2 months.
Our packaging is designed to offer exceptional storage for your superior coffee beans. Once opened, we recommend storing your coffee in an airtight, glass container, in a cool, dark place. We don’t recommend refrigerating your coffee.
